One of the advantages to teaching reading in Spanish first is that you have a lot more phonetic words to use! We don't have the same need for sight word work that we do when we teach English first. Still, we're sometimes required to teach sight words. To help meet that need, and to provide reading practice for our emerging readers, I created Palabras prodigiosas high-frequency word work.
The words are taken from the RAE's list of high frequency words, and fit well with any curriculum. I believe that words are best learned when they are used in context, so I included an original poem on each word work sheet. Students can build the word, trace the word, write the word, color the word, and find it in the poem. There's even a place to tally the number of times the word appears in the poem, bringing in a spot of math!
The poems are simple and easy to memorize, which means they'll provide excellent reading practice for new readers. The word work pages all follow the same format, so once you've taught students to use one, they'll be able to use them independently. You could use them for morning work, a literacy center, or in guided reading.
Try them out now! Here are five free word work sheets from the first set of Palabras prodigiosas, Level I. Click the image to go download your set.
