Hispanic Heritage Month Reading Passages

Hispanic Heritage Month provides us with an opportunity to explore the contributions Hispanics have made to music, the arts, technology, politics, literature, and more. There is a growing number of children's biographies that help us introduce our children to these historical figures, but still there are many more whose story is not available to our students. So I'd like to share with you this collection of reading passages that I've created for Spanish readers.

10 Latinas in History includes one-page reading passages on 10 different Latinas. They are available in full color or black-and-white versions. Each page includes a quote from the woman, a short biography and a set of fast facts that includes their birthname, as well as where and when they were born. The 10 women featured are:
  1. Ellen Ochoa
  2. Isabel Allende
  3. Dara Torres
  4. Frida Kahlo
  5. Linda Ronstadt
  6. Dolores Huerta
  7. Sonia Sotomayor
  8. Carolina Herrera
  9. Rita Moreno
  10. Sor Juana de la Cruz

To help assess the student's progress, I've also added reading comprehension worksheets that focus on facts and vocabulary from the passages, a matching activity, dictionary reference, and complete the sentence. An answer key is included.

You can download a sample reading passage here.

The set is available in English or Spanish.
